Bengal
Wild-cat ancestry, leopard markings, the energy of a small dog.
Bengals are domestic cat × Asian leopard cat hybrids (typically 4+ generations from the wild ancestor). They're loud, demanding, water-curious, and prone to escape. Many cities + insurance carriers have restrictions; some require F4 or later generation only.
What makes them, them
- 8–15 lb adult; short, glittered coat in spotted or marbled.
- Athletic — they climb shelves, open doors, fetch.
- Vocal: chirps, trills, occasional yowls.
- Some lines have IBS / chronic GI issues.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Check local laws — Bengals are restricted or banned in NYC, Hawaii, and several countries.
- Catio strongly recommended; indoor-only without enrichment becomes destruction.
- Tag essential — Bengal escapes are wide-radius, often via a window screen they pushed out.
