British Shorthair
Round, plush, and famously chill.
British Shorthairs are the breed equivalent of a warm pancake. They're not lap cats — they sit nearby instead. Robust, dense, and surprisingly heavy for their size. Indoor-only is the breed standard for a reason — they have very little street smarts.
What makes them, them
- 9–17 lb adult; thick double coat, the iconic 'British Blue' is one of many colours.
- HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) screenable from age 1.
- Slow to mature — 3–5 years to fill out.
- Quiet voices, rarely vocal.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Indoor or catio only — they're poor judges of cars, dogs, heights.
- Annual cardiac screen from year 3 catches HCM before symptoms.
- Microchip + Boop tag; if they slip out, they tend to stay within 50m.
How Boop helps British Shorthairs stay home
Boop's lightweight breakaway collar tag works for cats who normally don't wear one — perfect when you're worried about a contractor visit.
