Dachshund
Long body, big heart, terrible spinal anatomy.
Dachshunds were bred to dig badgers out of holes. The body shape is a feature for badger work and a liability for everything else — their backs are the single most fragile spinal column in the dog world. Tag them, but more importantly, know IVDD warning signs.
What makes them, them
- 8–32 lb depending on standard / miniature / kaninchen.
- Three coat varieties: smooth, longhaired, wirehaired.
- IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) hits 1 in 4 — limit jumping from height.
- Stubborn beyond belief; consistent training matters more than for most breeds.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Banned from couches without ramps; a 60cm jump can rupture a disc.
- Cold-sensitive — winter coats aren't cosmetic.
- Doxies dig and they squeeze through gaps — fence base AND fence top.
How Boop helps Dachshunds stay home
If the worst happens and your Dachshund slips a disc on the run, the scan history shows where they were last seen — vital for the rescue team.
