German Shepherd
Smart, loyal, and the most theft-targeted working breed in North America.
German Shepherds are the working-line equivalent of a sports car: precision-bred for intelligence and drive, prone to overheating without proper care. They're protective enough that 'lost' is rare — 'stolen' is the bigger risk, especially with show-line puppies under 12 months.
What makes them, them
- 65–90 lb adult; double-layered coat with serious shedding cycles.
- Hip dysplasia genetics — get OFA-cleared parents only.
- Two distinct lines: working (lean, drivey) and show (sloped back, mellower).
- Bonds intensely with one or two humans — separation distress is common.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Always microchip + tag — stolen Shepherds get re-homed in a new state within 48 hours of theft.
- Don't post 'new puppy!' photos with location data on social media for the first 6 months.
- If you crate-train, never leave the crate visible from the street.
How Boop helps German Shepherds stay home
Every Boop scan is geotagged with the scanner's consent. If your Shepherd resurfaces in a different state, you'll know — and have a starting point for the report.
