Golden Retriever
Sociable, water-loving, and famously bad at staying put when a friend walks by.
Goldens love every human and every dog they've ever met. That's adorable until it means they happily follow a stranger four blocks away from home. Recall training is the single biggest determinant of whether your Golden ever needs Lost Mode.
What makes them, them
- 55–75 lb adult; double coat sheds year-round, blows twice a year.
- Bred to retrieve from water — they will happily swim into anything.
- Hip + elbow dysplasia common past age 6; lipomas common past 8.
- Cancer rates are notably higher than breed average — annual senior bloodwork starting at 7.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Off-leash only in fully fenced areas; a Golden's recall is unreliable when a swimmer or another dog is involved.
- Wet coat hides ID — NFC + QR tag works through fur where engraved metal often catches.
- Heatstroke risk is real for the cream-coloured English variants in summer; walk before 8am.
