Norwegian Forest Cat
Outdoor-adapted Vikings of the cat world.
Wegies are the outdoor cat of Scandinavia — built to hunt mice in subarctic forests. Modern Wegies in apartments are still wired for it: they want to climb, they want to hunt, they need vertical space. With a catio, they thrive; without one, they get destructive.
What makes them, them
- 9–20 lb adult; double coat with woolly undercoat for −20°C.
- Slow to mature — 4–5 years to full size.
- Generally robust; HCM and glycogen storage disease IV are screen-able.
- Water-tolerant — they fish.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- If you allow outdoor access, microchip + Boop tag is non-negotiable.
- Wide-radius wanderers — 1–3 km range is normal.
- Heat sensitivity above 25°C; the coat doesn't shed enough.
How Boop helps Norwegian Forest Cats stay home
For semi-outdoor cats, every scan is a check-in. Boop's scan history maps the cat's range over weeks — useful for spotting a route change that means trouble.
