Poodle (Standard / Miniature / Toy)
Smart, hypoallergenic, and three sizes for every household.
Poodles are routinely ranked the second most-intelligent breed (after Border Collies). They learn doors, latches, and routines in days. The Standard is a working water dog at heart; Miniatures and Toys are companion-bred but inherit the same problem-solving brain.
What makes them, them
- Standard: 45–70 lb. Miniature: 12–20 lb. Toy: 4–6 lb.
- Single-coat (true hair, not fur) — needs clipping every 6–8 weeks.
- Long-lived: Standards 12–15y, Toys 14–18y.
- Prone to Addison's, bloat (Standards), and luxating patella (Toys).
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Tag the collar visibly — Poodles get groomed often and groomers may remove other ID.
- Toy Poodles are tiny enough that off-leash + a hawk = a real risk in some regions.
- Standards bloat — feed two smaller meals + no hard exercise within an hour.
