Pug
Comic relief in a flat-faced package.
Pugs are charming, stubborn, and biologically tragic. The breed standard has been so pushed that BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) affects most of them. They're loved deeply because they need to be — they require careful management to live well.
What makes them, them
- 14–18 lb adult; short coat sheds disproportionately.
- Brachycephalic — many pugs benefit from BOAS surgery.
- Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) is rare but invariably fatal; check the bloodline.
- Eyes protrude; protect from injury.
Safety — what actually goes wrong
- Never fly cargo — many airlines ban brachy breeds for good reason.
- Walk in cool early morning; carry water always.
- Tag visible — many pug strays are reported in the first few hours.
